Construction of a Different Sort

Military construction, or MILCON, is the process of constructing and maintaining real property assets for use by the U.S. Dept of Defense — the military.  According to 10 U.S.C. 2801, MILCON “includes any construction, development, conversion, or extension of any kind carried out with respect to a military installation”.  These projects are congressionally authorized and appropriated, and include construction projects for all types of buildings, roads, utility systems, and other critical infrastructure.  MILCON projects typically involve new construction of facilities and support systems but can also address maintenance and repairs on existing structures as well as demolition when necessary.  Since each branch of the U.S. military has its own set of requirements when it comes to MILCON, it is important for companies working in this field to have an understanding of the specific needs and regulations that apply.
